Oviedo: Elegance, History, and the Heart of Asturias

Located in the center of the region, Oviedo combines the elegance of a stately capital with the accessibility of a pedestrian-friendly city. Famous for its pristine streets, terrace squares, and vibrant cultural life, the city captivated Woody Allen himself, who described it as "a fairy tale."

A Journey into Pre-Romanesque Art

The greatest pride of Oviedo is its historical heritage. In the 9th century, the city was the capital of the Kingdom of Asturias, making it the cradle of pre-Romanesque art. At the foot of Mount Naranco stand two unique architectural gems in the world, declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo. In the historic center, the impressive Catedral de San Salvador dominates the main square; its Cámara Santa houses relics of immeasurable historical and religious value, such as the Cruz de la Victoria and the Holy Shroud.

Culture, Sculptures, and Street Life

Walking through Oviedo is like traversing an open-air museum. Over a hundred bronze sculptures adorn its streets and squares, paying tribute to both real and fictional characters, from La Regenta by Leopoldo Alas "Clarín" in front of the cathedral, to the charming figure of Mafalda in San Francisco Park, the true green lung of the urban center.

The Teatro Campoamor is the cultural epicenter of the city, internationally known for hosting the annual Princess of Asturias Awards, an event that places Oviedo in the spotlight of global arts and sciences.

Gastronomy and Chigre Tradition

Oviedo is also a feast for the palate. Calle Gascona, known as the "Cider Boulevard," is a must-stop to taste freshly poured natural cider accompanied by portions of Cabrales cheese or a good cachopo. For dessert, the capital boasts a legendary confectionery tradition: one cannot leave the city without trying carbayones (an almond and yolk pastry) or moscovitas (thin almond cookies covered in chocolate).

Hospitable, monumental, and full of life, Oviedo is the perfect starting point to discover the soul of northern Spain.
